Another Day of Conversation & Nature

Today was another day off, which was spent engaging in conversation with some people from across the US and globe. I love to hear stories and discuss faith and politics with people that don't all think alike. Plus, we got to do it surrounded in nature.

Peace,
Ross

One of my favorite towns...

Yesterday I had the day to myself and I took off for Breckenridge (one of my favorite towns in the whole world!) I could go on and on, but the pics tell the story: coffee, slopes, ice sculptures, etc.

Peace!

From Tweet to Post

Let me first say that I think comedy might just be the most difficult genre to understand. People are so varied and what we call funny is as varied as we are.

Explosions are exciting.
Kids dying are sad.
But what's funny is so so very different.

The other day I made a tweet that a sitcom based on Nickelback would be a success because they are laughable. That got me thinking about other things that combined with Nickelback would be comedy gold...

Brendan Frasier
Paul Walker
Talking Dogs
Flatulence
People Falling

Think about it. I'm pressing publish post, and am expecting a phone call from Comedy Central.

Peace,
Ross

Fast Forward 25 Years...

I remember being 4 years old, watching the Challenger space-launch with my Mom. I remember the countdown and the take off and the explosion. I remember the President addressing the nation at a time of loss and shock.

Fast forward 25 years...

I wonder if it were to happen today, if we would continue to pursue space, and dream about the future? Or would we become frightened and legislate a cutoff of all things that may be perceived as dangerous and unknown?

Maybe its our sue-happy culture, maybe we've grown soft, but I praise the scientists and uber-creative dreamers for not quitting 25 years ago! It is a testament to the creative spirit, and I think its worth remembering and taking stock - especially today.

Peace,
Ross

Discoveries...

Are you a learner? Do you love discovering new truths and stretching your beliefs? Are you actively putting yourself in positions to learn and make new discoveries?

If you consider yourself an artist or creative person, i'm sure you treasure all things "learning."

I'd be interested in the sources you use to stretch yourself.

Are you a book person, film, interview, conversation; or does something else inspire and teach you?

Ideas and thoughts are appreciated!

Ross

January Had Other Plans...

Welp, January's weather wasn't the best for touring. The month had other plans than we did. We got some ridiculous snowfall these past few weeks! We will reschedule the canceled dates, so stay tuned. But if you know me, I make lemonade from the proverbial lemon...

This morning we took advantage of the foot of snow we got and took Olive on her 1st sled ride. She was quite the fan!

Ross

View from the Rhodes...

Some of you know, some don't, but I'm playing violin for Jeremy Larson at his upcoming CD Release concert and DVD shoot on March 12th at the Gillioz Theatre in Springfield, MO.

This CD is going to turn some heads, I promise! Its a beautiful soundscape of symphonic songwriting featuring Jeremy on piano and guitars, swelling from Jonny Greenwood-esque writing to more intense overdriven-percussion reminiscent of Mutemath, all the while giving the listener something truly unique and original.

Here's a quick video I shot during rehearsal on Monday:

This concert NEEDS TO BE ON YOUR CALENDAR and even deserves a road trip. Darren King (Mutemath) will be on drums for Jeremy's set, and I'll also be playing a few tunes on a side project with Darren, Stacy DuPree (Eisley), and Jeremy. All in all, its gonna' be a good night of music!

I'll make more posts on this as we get closer to the big show.

Peace,
Ross

Chicago

This past week has been absolutely overwhelming! I prefer to maintain an even whelm.

I could write quite a lot about this weekend in Chicago: the drive, the band, the venue, the hotel, the food, the bitter cold...but i'll just let these few pics do the storytelling.

Hope you had a WONDERFUL weekend. Take care.

Peace,
-Ross

Congrats to The Civil Wars!

I've been a HUGE fan of this duo for quite some time. Last night, The Civil Wars had their television debut on Leno, performing their title track, Barton Hollow.

Distraction

Here's some lyrics/poetry I ran across today that I thought I'd share with you. You've all probably met this person. Maybe you are this person. I know I've been both. For whatever reason, I felt it was appropriate for my here and now.

DISTRACTION

© 2009 Ross Christopher

Don’t you wish you could excuse yourself
But the distraction is too much
Its made you lose sight of your way
And now all you know is the place you’re in

Like a constant reminder of what you’ve forgotten to do
How you’ve stopped living and let go
You’ve been blinded by a false god
That seemed so perfect to take you where you needed to be

And you’re left alone
With a void that burns

And you’re broken down in pieces
Of lessons unlearned

Everyone told you good job
Everyone said you were right
But you’d lied for too long
And they just didn’t want to see you sink anymore

And you’re left alone
With a void that burns

And you’re broken down in pieces

Of lessons unlearned

So what’s next
Where from here
How do you get back
From a lifelong tragedy

And you’re left alone
With a void that burns

And you’re broken down in pieces
Of lessons unlearned

Peace,
Ross

Mark Twain: a precursor to an untrue history

Recently I read that the newest editions of Mark Twain's, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn have been edited. Have you read it? I remember it from 7th or 8th grade. I remember reading it aloud in the classroom, 1 paragraph at a time. I remember cringing when I had to read the N-word aloud too.

Now, kids won't have to cringe anymore.

But, perhaps I learned a dirty (yet true) history of the American past. I didn't become racist from reading the word. If any response and reaction was made, it was a sadness that this was normal speak of the 1800's.

So now we have edited, PC versions of the classics emerging; and even though we may no longer have to cringe and feel uncomfortable as we read these degrading and de-humanizing words and descriptors, we will certainly forget how far we have come, the accomplishments of so many to end this "normalcy."

What are the long term implications - what does this do to art in general?

Will artists now write in such a way that is fearful of future edits?

Will we write more bland, so as to avoid the possibility of differing future opinions?

My 2 cents,
Ross

p.s. i'd love to discuss this...especially from any teachers

TOP 10 Albums of the Decade

Ok, so i've done my TOP 5 albums of 2010...but now comes the REAL list!

Here's my TOP 10 of the 2000's (in no particular order - that task was just too tough for me to do a job I could live with).

These are the albums I was in love with and playing constantly in college, post-college, and yesterday. They remain mainstays in my rotations, and have influenced me a TON! I'm sure if you listen close enough, you'll hear nods and references to these in my own albums and recordings.

Please feel free to share your top albums as well - I'm eager to see what has influenced you!

Peace,
Ross
